#IWasThinking E01S01
The complexity of the world depends on human interaction.

Here’s a first video blog of many I’ve been meaning to do for some time.

If I get decent attention within a week I plan on producing an entire season shot in outdoors, edited, with an intro, etc. I hope I have a lot of things others might think are cool to talk about.

At what point does the need for security eclipse human dignity and compassion?

Yesterday I went through the imaging scanner at JFK Terminal 4 for my Virgin America flight to San Francisco.  Evidently they found something, because after the scan, I was asked to step aside to have my breast area examined.  I explained to the agent that I was a breast cancer patient and had a bilateral mastectomy in April and had tissue expanders put in to make way for reconstruction at a later date.

I told her that I was not comfortable with having my breasts touched and that I had a card in my wallet that explains the type of expanders, serial numbers and my doctor’s information (pictured) and asked to retrieve it.  This request was denied.  Instead, she called over a female supervisor who told me the exam had to take place.  I was again told that I could not retrieve the card and needed to submit to a physical exam in order to be cleared.  She then said, “And if we don’t clear you, you don’t fly” loud enough for other passengers to hear.  And they did.  And they stared at the bald woman being yelled at by a TSA Supervisor.

To my further dismay, my belongings, including my computer, were completely out of sight. I had no choice but to allow an agent to touch my breasts in front of other passengers.

I just didn’t understand why these agents were so insensitive to the situation. I would have been happy to show her which bag was mine and have her retrieve the card, but she did not allow even that. I have been through emotional and physical hell this past year due to breast cancer.  The way I was treated by these TSA agents added a shitload of insult to injury and caused me a great deal of humiliation.

I understand the need for safety when flying, but there is also a need for those responsible to be compassionate and sensitive to each situation.  These agents were neither.

I can only comfort myself with the fact that Karma is always circular.

UPDATE 1: Laughing Squid has a round-up of media coverage on this story and I’ve been posting update on my Twitter account: @HRLori

UPDATE 2: TSA has responded to the issue on the TSA Blog and apologized.

InnovationInspiration: 8500 Startups vs Skype

nicolaerusan:

The recent Microsoft purchase of Skype for 8.5 billion dollars left a lot of people unhappy, and calling for Ballmer’s resignation as CEO. So, what could Microsoft have done instead of buying Skype? Well, what would happen if Microsoft invested 1 million dollars in 8500 startups, and gave them…

On Abortion…

Abortion… big issue today in this nation.

Some solutions about the issue of abortion (not on all the politics being used to pass or not a federal budget):

Raped Women and Crack heads should be allowed to abort if they don’t want the kids. Young girls going to the abortion clinic a second time for being irresponsible should be snipped or punished in some form. To those that support the pro-life stand, please go to your nearest adoption agency and start adopting as many kids as you possibly can if you really care about life so much #shutdown #abortion #flamebait #trolling

Bitbucket or Github?

This week we have to make a final choice of what technology will be used to replace our somewhat big subversion repository (2 Gigs). Huge imports are beginning to be a pain and we’re tired of the .svn folders and not being able to commit if the central server is down.

As time passed we become more paranoid and started making automated backups of the repo using good old rsync, so we’ve organically saw the need for a distributed option that can let us commit our work even if we’re online.

The obvious choices are Mercurial on BitBucket or Git on GitHub.

I’ve tried GitHub with the free account on open repositories, and I’ve tried Mercurial on my own since it feels a lot more home (command wise) if you are an old subversion user.

If you’ve tried both of these services, I’d love to hear your opinion.

http://github.com

Update: bitbucket.org ftw. Mercurial proved to be more friendly for our svn brainwashed minds. Also it was free, that was a very attractive factor since you’re not bound by any contracts if you don’t like it. So far so good, we think we’re staying. Everything makes a lot of sense.

Hello Android

Testing from Tumble on android. Found the app on Frostwire for android, it was installed on somebody’s phone.

Confession: I cheat on my MacBook

It’s insane the amount of time a person like me spends with his/her computer.

Come to think about it, it’s a very intimate relationship that you have with these machines, you do so many things with it, you read, you write, you watch movies, tv, you play games, music, you create together… I even start to miss my computer when I’ve been away from it for too long. I realized she’s like my girlfriend. (Paulina don’t be jealous this is all metaphorical thinking)

First thing I do when I wake up or when I come back from the street is to log in to it, it’s almost like saying good morning or greeting her when you come in, being the login/password action that personal kiss to start interacting together.

I put my hands on it more times and for a longer time than on any thing else, I also look at it more than anything or anyone else… creepy right?

Well… it turns out I’m having an affair now

She’s an Android.

Android Story: Walking and Kindle Reading

I love running and I love reading.

I got into running more seriously last year, I got addicted to it while training for half marathons and the Ing Miami Marathon. As a result, I think I over did it, and now every time I try to run past 6 miles I get a very discomforting pain on my right knee.

I got into reading when I lived in NYC, my favorite place to read was the NY subway, I would often miss my station because I was deep in whatever I was reading. There was this tight relationship between walking into the subway and reading that I loved commuting back and forth to work. When I left NY and started working from home it seemed like the only time left I had for reading was going to bed, and you guessed it, books now put me to sleep.

As a result of all this I have a pile of books waiting to be finished and I’ve gained 30lbs.

I was recently skimming over books at Barnes & Nobles and got hooked with the beginning of “The Facebook Effect”, but I knew that If I spent the almost $26 on it it would end up with the rest of my other recent book purchases, unfinished.

Then I remembered that the kindle is cheaper now and that I could give that a try, but I don’t think I need another device for reading, so I gave it a try and still bought the electronic version of the book (for kindle), only that I’d be reading the book on the tiny little screen of my Android phone with Kindle for Android.

Being a person that can’t really be sitting in one place for too long (unless I’m working), instead of running I decided I will walk for longer periods of time while doing something I’ve not been able to do, read. Walk and read. This is something that I couldn’t do with a paper book, at least not with the ridiculous amount of sweat that can pour out of me, also holding the pages from turning would be really weird, so I decided I’d try to do it with the phone, I’ve been reading so many websites and blogs when I walk that a book might also be doable.

So this morning I grabbed my Android, Audio Headsets and snickers and started a 7 mile long walk (about 2 hours and 23 mins), during which I was glued to the screen of my phone reading “The Facebook Effect”. The Kindle for Android (like Kindle for Mac on which I’ve also been reading on) allows you to configure font sizes and background colors in many ways and when compared to paper you gotta admit that it’s just better.

The form factor of the phone, I think for the purpose of walking and reading is much better than that of the real kindle device, it fits very nicely on one hand, plus you can have all this other stuff running at the same time: Pandora to stream music and so that you keep a decent walking pace (4 min. per km.) and Cardio Trainer to keep track of the workout (on a map).

The result today, in one walk, I read 11% of the book and I burnt aprox. 1450 calories.

If you think paper is better than ePaper/screens think again, and objectively. You probably like paper better since you’re used to it, that’s how you learned to read, but there’s so many benefits to reading on a screen: It’s lighter, bookmarks can be synced to other devices, fonts can change, background can change according to your conditions (dark or light), references are hyperlinks, and if you ever move you won’t have to carry lots of books with you. In the end what matters is the content of the book and you’ll be able to digest probably even better if you make the effort.

I think I’m gonna go for another walk tonight at 7pm.

Random Thoughs on Pandora for Android - Makes the roads safer

I mostly use Pandora for Android when I’m on my car. If most users are doing the same Pandora is making driving safer for everyone around Pandora drivers.

Why?

Because they must hate it when someone calls on the phone and interrupts the music experience.

I think if you have music coming from your phone, you’re less likely to be talking and driving.

On “Inception” and Programming

After watching Inception I think I have an easy way to explain what complex object oriented programming can be like.

Next time someone asks I’ll say something along these lines:

“Did you watch that movie “Inception”? Programming is like that, but now imagine that instead of dreaming in 4 levels (dreams inside dreams) you could be dreaming in about 12 levels down, but not only that, you could be having several dreams at once, and most of the times some of these dreams have to share the same things in order to make sense or they break. So Programming is like Inception, but Deeper, In Parallel and Synchronized.”
